Likewise, what do beauty, and other abstracts, have to do with survival of the species.

These are terms we use for information dense entities or maybe meme-like entities, IMO. Information dense means highly "wrapped", compressed or fractalized. Have you ever seen the ratios of people's proportions based upon the number "phi", aka, Golden ratio? This is the ratio of sequential Fibonacci numbers. There is a plastic surgeon who uses this ratio to recommend changes for people seeking plastic surgery. He "rubberizes" their faces using software and stretches certain points to these "optimum" positions. It seems to work at some level.

Why is survival of the unfit now a part of evolutionary reality? What has evolved in the human spirit or consciousness that now moves us to preserve our weakest members?

Evolution doesn't care what our opinion is about evolution. The term "fit" can never be applied contemporaneously (at least without appearing silly). It is an unfortunate term. The only thing evolution cares about is reproduction. If we create a niche, it will be filled. That is all.

<<What has evolved in the human spirit or consciousness that now moves us to preserve our weakest members?>>

There has always been charity and kindness. It has always had its limits, I'm afraid.

When I read this article in today's NYT, I thought of that comment of yours and decided to find it on the NYT on the web...

nytimes.com

Isn't that profoundly discouraging?
