I don't think reproduction is what evolution cares about. I think it is preservation of its genetic code. A small point.

Not sure what that difference would be in your semantics, but I think I would still maintain my choice of words. Preservation of genetic code is a side effect of reproduction, but not the only possible side effect. If a random mutation promotes reproduction, then it is reinforced. That "what is it" part, well that is just a gradient seeker. Life seeks to make more until a limit is hit. Barring a limit, it reproduces ad infinitum.

As for the tires, I've been riding fewer miles these days, but you know I had a close call. One day on the way home last week, someone dropped a load of stuff that flattened some tires. I counted maybe 10 vehicles pulled off along the side of the road with ... flats. Boy, was I vigilant all the way home.
