Those "useless" members of society may one day have the genetic sequences that ensure the survival of us. It is in our interest to keep the genome large as possible. It's like having a seed bank of only one hybrid. That a sure recipe for disaster.

There is a goal in optimizing that seeks to prevent an overly specialized solution. In neural networks this is called over-training. All you get out of an over-trained network is parroting. There is no generalization.

A few years ago all engineers were told to specialize. The sage advice was that if you didn't you wouldn't be employed. I am and always have been a generalist. I have a couple of areas of modest specialty but no specific area super-specialist standing. Without people like me, companies lose the ability to find solutions for complex systems. All the specialists need to be coordinated and joined by someone who can span multiple specialties. And I guarantee that it isn't the managers.
