Until they have an iron clad GUI that hides it all like Windows 2000/ME etc linux will not do well at home.

Iron clad GUI? You are joking, right? I think it's naff.

The only thing about Windows GUI is people are used to it. It's not in the slightest bit intuitive. Some crap features that spring to mind:-

a) Random apps deciding to "come to the top" and / or grab the focus. That is really annoying.

b) Menus disappearing because a random app creates a window itself. WTF does a menu have to disappear for? It's even more annoying when you're five layers deep in the damn Start menu and it suddenly vanishes.

c) Windows cannot be moved until the app "allows" itself to be moved. If Excel is busy doing a long calculation, tough, you cannot minimize it, move it, or do anything to get the damn thing out of the way. What kind of design is that?

That's just for starters. The only reason people think this is reasonable behaviour is that they are used to it.

What's wrong with text files and CLI sometimes? If you've got 5 Windows machines, how are you going to make sure they're all configured the same (or even check it)? Well, you open the GUI and regedit and check these 500 items... With Linux it's simple - copy the text config file to the other machine(s). Do a diff to see if they're the same.
