Where he quotes McQuillan saying, ""Probably the odds of a networking chip company having an IPO are 50 to 1," he would have been more honest if he'd have emphasized the context: that there are so many acquisitions, any start-up in this space is likely to be taken out.

Actually, I believe that is what he was trying to say. But poor writers rely on telepathy where a turn of phrase might serve them better.
