Pat, re:capex
this is exactly what ALA said on conf.call
optical and broadband access technology will dominate capex.

Zbyslaw

P.S. I hope conf. is going well

The blanket statement that "capital spending by telecom carriers" will grow by X% masks a huge range of growth
rates among different types of equipment. Next year, for example, spending on voice-related equipment will probably
decline dramatically at the same time that spending on optical gear continues to increase in a big way. Industry
gurus Ryan Hankin Kent, for example, estimate that the global optical transport market will grow 36% in 2001,
which is a lot faster than the 21% increase they see for the entire market.

Hi Pat

You once said you were invested in SDLI instead of JDSU because of the 15% bump you would get when the merger is approved. Is this still your position?

Also, what do you think will happen to JDSU and SDLI if the merger doesn't go through? How much do you think JDSU and SDLI will drop?

Pat,

Here's the latest on Furukawa ownership of JDSU: "According to our very latest proxy as of October 16, 2000 Furukawa held 11.1% of our shares or 106,528,080."
