As usual, Malcolm, your long term perspective provides valuable insights. What most of the investors/traders suffer from is a lack of patience. If a stock falters for a few days/weeks/quarters, it's branded dead money, and they go hunting for the next rocketship. It's pure fantasy to think one can consistently find stocks positioned like qcom was in 4Q99 and then cash out on 1/3/00. That's the Holy Grail for the traders, and I wish them luck, but I'm just going to grind it out.

Briefly out of lurk mode, to say that I'm learning that holding gorillas is the best way for me, with the important caveat that they need to be held without margin! That was a painful lesson for me from earlier this year, but by converging on the strategy that is the bedrock of this thread, I've been able to watch my shrunken portfolio follow a (slow, so far) recovery path, in spite of the market. Thanks to all the elders and other contributors on this thread who are repeating the lessons of patience for those of us who are sometimes slow to learn.
