PORTSMOUTH — Approximately 65 years ago, Social Security was born in the face of
opposition from Republicans, and despite its success at providing all Americans with a
base income for retirement it is still being attacked by Republicans, said James
Roosevelt Jr.

Roosevelt is the grandson of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the president under whose
administration Social Security was founded during the lean years of the Depression, in
the decade before World War II.
