"Texas
Instruments is still seeing strong demand for its
market-leading digital signal processors in both of these
markets. The company's last quarter results posted in
line with analysts' expectations as revenues and earnings
grew 25 percent and 30 percent, respectively, on a
year-over-year basis. An article in Barron's published
after the company reported earnings basically stated that
Texas Instruments' stock was a better bargain than that
of most of its peers in the telecommunications industry.
Furthermore, it appears that Texas Instruments is
spreading its dominance from the wireless arena ( DSPs
or digital signal processors in cell phones) to the
explosive DSL (digital subscriber line) industry.
According to IDC Research, Texas Instruments'
products will be used in 45 percent of all the ADSL
equipment in the world, based on the total amount of
analog line drivers and ADSL chipsets that the company
is set to ship in the year 2000. Of all the various DSL
flavors, ADSL is currently the preferred choice of
consumers because it provides substantially higher
download speeds than upload speeds, which is ideal
because the majority of people download rather than
upload files on the Internet."
