I do have to go, but I wanted to comment. The Republican Pary is relatively more ideological than it was prior to Reagan, and it is Republicans who tend to support tax simplification ( the flat tax or near substitute), deregulation ( which tends to cartelize industries), and free trade ( Clinton and Gore came through on NAFTA and GATT, but it was the Republicans in Congress who passed them, the Democrats mostly voted against them). This is the sort of thing I have in mind.
