They believed it was God's will. They tried to convince me to believe it. They failed, of course, but I did almost envy them.

I believe this is less of a choice for you or them than a predisposition, IMO. I find that I too try to find meaning for things in my life - but it always ends up being "my meaning". The "God" I imagine is a god of lessons and learning. It involves recognizing shortcomings in myself and having more compassion for others. I've just never found a religion that is for me.

I think this spiritual thing means something different for everyone.

1. Some people are very literal about the mechanistic nature of life and that is all they want.
2. Others are interested in defining something that really transcends the mechanistic view of the universe.
3. Still others look for shrink-wrap philosophies and want to defer to someone else as the authority on complex matters.

I just am not wired the third way. I oscillate between the first two as the situation requires.
