Ted,

<I am bringing this all up because I have to believe that KLIC's warning is more company specific than industry wide.
Does anyone know the company and whether this is a problem mainly confined to KLIC?>

The biggest semiconductors drivers for 2000 and 2001 are PCs and Mobile Phones - in that order.

Mobile Phone consumption targets went down from almost 500Mu to 400-425Mu for 2000 and corresponding reduction in forecast for 2001.

PC Unit forecast has gone down by 2-4 Mu for Q4 and corresponding adjustments are being made for 2001.

So, this is a industry problem and not just KLICs. The question is are the current expectations for KLIC and other players in line with this. I am afraid the answer is "not quite". We may have to go through Q4 for all this to be digested.

Having said that I think what we have now may be a much needed mid-cycle correction. A lot of the hypergrowth may have been driven by the Internet bubble and with the current deflation that is going on we may get back to a more sustainable longer term growth.

Chuck

Ted,

KLIC is a leading supplier of wire bonding equipment. Prevailing technology trends for chip attach are to microBGA. IBM has been licensing C4 (their version of MBGA) for the last several years. Intel, AMD, Motorola and others are licensees. It may be having an effect on KLIC.
