I'm pretty squishy on the deity stuff. I think most names applied to what I mean have way too much baggage. I think there is a layer of consciousness above that of the individual. It is a collective intelligence, much like that of the ant colony. While any particular ant in a nest of ants isn't all that smart, through a complex interaction of semi-autonomous parts, you get something greater than the ant as an individual. I think something like this collective intelligence may exist for people, animals and possibly the planet as a whole, but I stop short of calling it God. The big "c" Cosmic Force, maybe. ;) I think a primitive notion of God ends up being self-defeating for me as a scientific person. That isn't to say that I understand all or even most of what is happening out there. That is the space in which my Cosmic Force works.
