thank you for the link. The article also confirms mustang changes

But AMD also doesn't keep its hands in pockets. Unlike Intel the company tries to stick to its promises, which is
not too hard to do actually. K7 core used in Athlon processors features a much higher clock frequency
potential than Intel Coppermine. That's why AMD Athlon will easily get to 1.5GHz. In order to retain parity with
Intel and to overcome the 1.5GHz barrier AMD will have either to switch to a more progressive manufacturing
technology or to introduce some changes to its CPU architecture. However, AMD can't boast sufficient
productive capacities and lacks time to negotiate the possible cooperation with the third companies that's why
the first option is unsuitable for them. So, the company decided on the second one.

For this purpose AMD is going to modify the pipeline of its Mustang core, which should be later used in all AMD
CPUs including server CPUs, Athlons and Durons. Namely, the pipeline of Mustang core will become a few
stages longer. However, this may cause a tangible performance drop that's why AMD will introduce larger L2
caches to prevent the processors from getting slower.

milo:

"AMD is planning to introduce a special server Athlon Ultra 1.4GHz in November. It will be base on the same Mustang core and will support from 512KB up to 4MB L2 cache depending on the customers demand. And these CPUs will work not only in dual- but also in multi-processor configurations. "

Great article...and from my perspective, fairly objective...Wonder if the Athlon Ultra is one of the pre-festive season goodies that Mr. Sanders will introduce at Comdex next week...
