partitioned databases arent the problem - using them in the configurations Microsoft is and somehow claiming there the equivalent of a cluster of Sun or IBM or DEC) systems by a measure of tpc or tpc/$ is. Sun has many single/dual CPU systems which are quite reliable uptime.netcraft.com
If they thought "Scale Out" made a lot of sense for real world database applications instead of playing hit and run on tpc-c they would likely be running similar benchmarks with products like Sybase IQ but they obviously dont think it does.
