Jim, Re: Looks like Joe's really been stirring it up on the Anandtech Boards...

Wow, great response by Anand. I think this attitude has helped him to distinguish his site from other big hardware site like Tom's Hardware. I always enjoyed Anands reviews very much and with this response I enjoy (and trust) them even more. I don't think we can accuse him of doing whatever Intel (or someone else) wants him to do. He just wants to do the job possible.

Since the SpecCPU Suite is a very important benchmark I don't know why he should ignore it -- although it favors Intels heavily optimized compilers. Maybe he should add another SpecCPU Test with non-optimized compilers to his scores to give this comparison as well. I think this would be the best compromise and everyone could make up his own mind about the scores.

Jim, <...stirring it up on the Anandtech Boards>

When lurking across the discussion board where
pople were bitching whether Anand is favoring
Intel processors or not, I ran into a message that
says:

<<<<You come here with no factual trace to your
allegations, and suggest Anands “laying the ground
work for a huge misinformation campaign on behalf
of Intel by including 4 pages of SPEC benchmarks”.>>>>

In support (I guess) the author has the following link:

anandtech.com

When looking into it, I found it very insinuating.
It shows three benchmarks from SPECviewperf suite
where 1GHz Athlon wins 2 ("Awadws-04", +15%, and
"DX-6", 30%) and loses in "DRV-07" by 7%, (11.67
versus 12.5).
Where Athlon wins, the benchmark chart is
shown in full scale of scores, from 0 to whatever,
so the 15-30% win looks like not by much. For "DRV-07"
however, the scale is plotted from 9.5 to 13, so
the Athlon looks like a big loser, by 35 or 50%,
depending on how to calculate.

For those who are less familiar with the art
of benchmarking 101, this trick is the first one
to use when trying to fool public with weak
product. I wonder why Anand has resorted to
this trick?
