YES! 09:06 ET Sprint FON (FON) 22 1/2: -- Update -- Also notable in Sprint's guidance this morning was the anticipated increase in 2001 capex to $6.2 bln from $5 bln in 2000; Merrill Lynch notes that it had assumed $4 bln capex in 2001, and thus sees this as one of the first instances of a company increasing capex forecasts. Could be a positive for the optical sector today.

Sprint said capital spending will rise 24 percent next year to $6.2
billion
, while Sprint PCS's
spending will rise 6.3 percent to $3.4 billion.

Part of the decline( eps) will result from the aggressive investments
Sprint will need to make in expanding and upgrading its various
networks to deliver high-speed broadband services. Many of those
investments were delayed over the past year in expectation that
the company would be acquired by WorldCom, a deal that unraveled amid
objections from government regulators.
