Its not certain that Connolly is the source of the story. It may have been Kenneth Curtis, a former chairman of the Maine Democrat party who is a law partner of Erin Lehane, sister of Gore spokesman Chris Lehane. Like Drudge would say, developing...

Not mentioning something does not amount to a cover up. I think that Connolly had to do what his conscience and interests dictated. That does not mean that one should take it seriously, nor that it is likely to have much traction.
