SENIORS DECEIVED BY GORE

The President of the United Seniors Association, Sandra Butler, said today
that senior citizens are highly disappointed in Vice President Al Gore's
comments during last night's debate. "The Vice President is trying to
deceive seniors and the American people about Social Security's financial
insolvency," Butler commented.

"Any fair evaluation of Social Security leads to only one conclusion, unless
we reform the program, it will be bankrupt in 30 years. Our next President
must show leadership in developing a consensus in support of reform.
Unfortunately, the comments made by the Vice President illustrate that he
would rather ignore the facts than address the problems of Social Security,"
noted Butler.

"The Vice President's plan to increase Social Security taxes if more revenue
is needed simply will not work. Social Security taxes have been increased
20 times since 1950 and the program is still facing bankruptcy. What we
need is reform and leadership, not a refusal to address the problems and
political gamesmanship shown last night by the Vice President," Butler
argued. "The Vice President took credit for saving Medicare by casting a
tie-breaking vote in the Senate. What he failed to mention was that the bill
increased taxes on Social Security benefits. He has never supported
meaningful long-term reforms that make increasing taxes unnecessary."
