re "he would have served his cause more by bringing it forward himself" I agree with you. He could have spun it into a positive, saying "alcohol has caused me problems, for example {describe arrest}. So I gave it up for good." Instead, he's dodged and look at the trouble he's gotten himself into. I don't think it will throw many votes Gore's way, but I do think it will cause some Bush supporters to stay home on election day. Bush will still get the redneck vote -- hell, this probably boosts his standing there.
