Michigan approves large tax package for Ford

LANSING, Mich., Nov 3 (Reuters) - The state of Michigan
said on Friday that it has approved a tax relief package worth
about $185.5 million for Ford Motor Co. <F.N> as an incentive
to rehabilitate and expand its Rouge complex in Dearborn, Mich.
Ford said earlier this week it plans to spend $1 billion on
a new assembly plant and some environmental initiatives at the
600-acre Rouge Center in Dearborn, plus expand and renovate
several other plants.
The state said the package was designed to encourage Ford
to keep at least 2,900 jobs at the facility and potentially up
to 3,800 jobs.
Ford said it was also in discussions with the city of
Dearborn and Wayne County on other tax incentives and road
improvements.
The tax package includes $108.7 million over the next 20
years for a single business tax credit, $5 million for a
technical education center, a 12-year abatement of a state
eduction tax worth $9 million, and job-training assistance of
$3.8 million. In addition, the state raised the single business
tax credit up to a maximum $30 million from $1 million, and
approved a so-called brownfield tax credit of up to $30 million
over 10 years.
The state said the Rouge redevelopment project will provide
more than $1.4 billion in revenue to Michigan over the life of
the agreement.
