Analysts' views help computer stocks

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Analysts' upbeat comments about the future of the PC market., helped to bolster computer stocks Friday.
The Goldman Sachs Computer Hardware Index ($GHA: news, msgs) , a key tracker of computer-related shares, rose by 1.4 percent.

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter was just one investment firm to provide its viewpoint regarding the much-debated PC industry.

"The outlook for the PC market is good, though not great," wrote analyst Gillian Munson in a research note. "We believe that Compaq's turnaround is working, even though PCs account for only a small part of its profitability."

Morgan Stanley said Compaq (CPQ: news, msgs) , which the firm rates an "outperform," is one of its favorites in the group, along with Dell (DELL: news, msgs) and Gateway (GTW: news, msgs) .

Dell is slated to release its third-quarter earnings Nov. 9. Its stock gained 75 cents to $32.56. Compaq shares lost 33 cents to $31.09.

Meanwhile, Merrill Lynch said that it believes Gateway is "on track from both a sales and earnings standpoint" for its fourth quarter. The investment firm reiterated its "buy" rating on shares of Gateway. The stock was flat at $50.40.

Analyst Steve Fortuna added that Merrill remains "bullish on the fourth-quarter industry outlook for PCs."

Elsewhere, IBM (IBM: news, msgs) will hold its analyst meeting in New York City Nov. 8. Big Blue shares lost $1.81 to $100.13.
