I believe that people in need should be on welfare, whatever that need is. Under dem's you have zillions of programs for each little thing [national healthcare?] Therefore: < Had certain Republican factions had their way there would be no, nada, public health insurance for anyone.> I don't see a problem with this... because it doesn't mean they wouldn't get medical care. Now you've got another program that could have been taken care of elsewhere... why not send them a check and let them do their own? You've got the govenment trying to run another health insurnance company. <If you think the support of two daughters insures the payment of adequate nursing home (not to mention the additional separate cost of medical care and hospitalization) without public assistance call around and price monthly nursing home care fees. Tell me what the cheapest monthly price is for a private pay resident. (Could you pay it for your parent?> So nursing homes paid for by the government is now an entitlement?? If so, is it a wonder this is what you get: < Then after touring the cheapest nursing home in town tell if you'd kennel your dog there.> <But what if Mom suddenly experienced a bout of congestive heart failure to the tune of 40K? And then another one? Money getting a little tight? You bet it is.) > Oh, so it wouldn't get a 'little tight' for the government [all of us] if THEY take care of it? You bet it will... by several fold I'm sure..... hello? Look, the problem is neither side will talk about what the basic safety net should be... you can't get a democrat in congress to make a decision as to when the little old lady you sight should no longer get the heart transplant... or kidney, or the latest cancer therapy... that's politics... dems will be no better than republicans, AND they'll probably create another agency to talk about it. YOU may not want to stand up and think about when about when Mom has had enough life support, or how to pay for her nursing home but let me clue you in... that's what life is all about.. do you really want the government filling that function? Jeez we're going to have a hell of a payroll. DAK
