DAK--

I hear a lot of people talk big about taking care of aging parents. Men in particular. Do you actually know who bears the burden of care for aging parents? Who has to quit the job and derail the career to care for Mom and Dad? Take a guess?

For some people and families it works well...for a while anyway. The trouble is of course when you have someone who is extremely old and frail and suffering from multiple illnesses unless you have the time, space and money to convert your home into a nursing care center you're sunk.

I stopped short of buying a wheel chair van and modifying the front of the house and interior when my father couldn't handle the few steps to the driveway or stand up to then seat himself in the car. My father's medical staff advised me not to make the changes. They didn't think he could take the strain of leaving the house so often anyway. Doctors and labs don't make house calls ya know. So that was that.

People live longer now and medical care had improved. I'm afraid we have an extremly older, debilitated population of elderly than ever before.

A whole lot of baby boomers will soon find out whether or not they can really talk the talk and walk the walk when it comes to againg parents.
