rrman,
Funny you should say that. I concur with your take on Manning. I did vote reform last time. (My family is liberal from cradle to crypt).

I too, find Day unpalatable. It started with the Alliance leadership race. Exactly as you say with the media coverage, it reminded me then and now of Charest or Campbell all over again.
I disagree on Chretien. I see him as Trudeau without the style. He is clever, not forthright (IMHO) and above all arrogant. Little guy from Shawinigan my big toe.

Now who's left ? :0) Pardon the pun.

regards
Kastel

rrman: It is easy to say nothing will change, feign indifference, and decide not to decide. However, my good man, it takes a bit more guts to take a chance. Day may not be perfect, but he is better than Tom Long, who was a plant by the left-wing conservatives.

The reason you don't see Day as a contender is that he doesn't have the razzle-dazzle, the smoke and mirrors. He is hoping that Canadians REALLY DO MEAN IT when they complain that politicians can't be trusted, and that what we truly need is a government that will keep its promises. He shoots straight, and calls it like it really is.

If you want a soap-opera instead of the boring truth, I suspect you also read novels instead of non-fiction.

Chretien is a liar and a egotistical charlatan. He has succeeded in leading the Liberals to the brink of political disaster, and knows full well that the only chance his party has is for the element of surprise to find the opposition parties snoozing. And he knows full well that the RCMP investigations are going to incriminate him and his cohorts.

So, what better way to maintain control of the national social re-engineering agenda than spring an election before the results of the RCMP investigations are published? After all, "What Canadians don't know won't hurt them," has worked thus-far, and will continue to work if he uses a bit of razzle-dazzle.

Ever watch a magician closely? My brother did when we were just kids. I was wrapped up in the show, but my brother told me all the way home about how the magician did everything. He explained all the ways that the magician would draw our eye away from something he was doing so that when our eye was deftly directed back, "Poof!" The bird would come out of his sleeve, or the balloon would burst, filled with water.

I was somewhat annoyed at my brother for spoiling the show for me, but I admired him for seeing all the things I didn't. I had been "had", and my brother "hadn't".

Chretien is a magician, but Canadians are starting to watch more of the things he doesn't WANT us to see instead of the things he WANTS us to see.

Maybe you should start reading the newspapers. I can assure you that you will see that Chretien gets his picture in the paper more than any other leader; that the Liberals make the banner across the TOP OF THE PAGE and the other parties are relegated to the middle or the bottom of the page; and that Chretien's smoke-and-mirrors are given print with the impression that he is somehow intelligent, insightful and deserves our respect.

I call bullshit.
