Did you know that real wages are below where they were in the early 1970s?

I can believe that to a certain extent because I still start out new employees at $10/hr, which is what I started them at in 1987.

But then I remember paying $198 for a round trip airfare to LA from Baltimore in 1978 (Freddy Laker) and just last year I got a round trip for $210 including the tax on UsAir. I have a client that still owns and uses one of the first Apple Laserwriters (150 dpi) that he bought for $8000. I can get one that is ten times better quality for $300 (but will I be using it 15 years later? -I doubt it).

Face it, we live in a world that has deflation and inflation at the same time. Real inflation adjusted wages are deceptive. Think about it the next time you use your keyless entry into your car....the one with anti-lock brakes, airbags with side impact protection and a six disc CD player. (hey, who knows maybe you are riding around in a VW beetle from the 70s)
