Ian,

Thanks for the explanation re: specialists. That's true... I forgot that TO and NYSE don't have market makers, so there should be no scalping per se. It still begs the question .. how did the first trade transact at $18.... 30% below last closing price? Maybe a buyer punted low, and a panic seller gave in?

Interesting to observe the house positions for yesterday's trades:

The significant net positive in yesterday's trades are:

Greenline + 194,000
Nesbitt + 128,000
National + 83,000
Scota net + 24,000
Merill + 21,000
Goldman, Swarb, CIBC all net positive

The significant net negatives are:

First Boston -522,000
New Crest -280,000
Dominion -78,000
HSBC -95,000

looks like the supply came from First Boston. Not surprising since U.S. dumps on any bad news, especially a Canadian outfit (.. time to crack open Canadian beer... proud to be canuck, eh!)

Well, for what is worth, I think First Boston got it wrong. BCS is going through transition to IP phones, that's why sales are slow. It's not like companies can give up using telephones. Like Mandy said during the conference call, small businesses are holding back buying phone systems during this transition stage to Internet telephony. Meanwhile, the regular systems are selling well with institutions such schools, hospitals, police, etc.

In fact, I think the BCS sector will surprise many and become a growth area as companies update to Internet technology. And Mitel is well positioned... voice recognition and optical switches.

BTW, kudos to the securities regulators for opening up conference calls to everyone, not just analysts. It's not that analysts are any brighter than most of us do-it-yourself investors, its just that in the past, they had privilege information. It'll be interesting to read what the analysts have to say when they comment on this latest quarter. The reports should be out next week. Anyone here having access to the reports, do share and summarize what they say in this forum.

Hopefully, they don't reduce their target price just because the stock has already taken a haircut! Where are the analysts with balls? :-)
