BTW, since federal debt, while still growing, is actually undercounted. This is since the debt is being transferred to the Social Security "trust" fund. The non-marketable securities pay a lower interest rate currently by 1-2 percentage points below the rate at which the actual obligations of the Social Security fund grow. Benefits are scaled by the CPI while the trust fund receives interest rates much below.
