What if I'm not at my PC where "myDirectory" is located. There is a way to make copies can carry that around but do you really want to be installing Directory on your friend's PC when you are there visiting? Or do we expect people to accept the limited functionality while you are away from their PC? Or to expect people to add the complexity of constantly-on internet access to their lives (not completely possible is it)? This type of access brings a host of different issues into play...and not to mention costs too. How bout creating a unique device that can store your personal directory into non-volitile memory (like those portable MP3 players). The Personal Directory module would connect to any computer with a USB port, or better yet, the BlueTooth wireless standard. In this way, your home PC could contain a master replica of your personal directory and you would carry around your portable personal directory with you like people carry around palmpilots today. Whenever you need the personal directory, you simply connect it to your friend's PC, notebook, bluetooth peer, etc. and your portable personal directory is available and can be updated. When you get home, you can sync it back with updates to your master replica (heck you could even sync it via the net while you are away from your home PC). I think that the portable personal directory would be a "no Brainer" to create with existing hardware solutions (i.e. the MP3 players or existing PDA or PalmPilots). The hard part would be to get the industry to start developing software apps that would interface smoothly with this PPD (Pertable Personal Directory) unit. Not because of technology limitations, but because of industry motivation. PS - I would invite any of you brainiaks to evolve these great ideas into our company's new eeeB@SE.com development of an NDS foundationed BSP service (BSP=Business Services Provisioner). Our group has formally kicked off the eeB@SE.com development last week (although as you well know Peter and a couple others on this board and within Novell - I have been evolving the idea for over a year now). The major partners have committed to it. The problem is that I am getting very little interest from Novell to get excited about helping our BSP business unit in any formally way. A lot of "ohh yes, we are interested" comments but then silence. One would think that Novell would be jumping all over the development and support of a Novell centric BSP offering that is purely based on NDS once they even got a whiff of this opportunity. Unfortunately that is not the case (even with the private help of good "friends" within Novell - including some on this board). I have concluded that some startup initiatives are even too small for Novell to care about. So maybe grass-roots community interest is where I have to look for a source to build our eeeB@SE.com development. Ahh sorry folks, I had to vent there a bit. We will get eeeB@SE.com going and successful in the up-coming months, even if we have to drag Novell or at least its products kicking and screaming into this solution. ROFL!! Ironic ehh? We have a lot of technical hurdle that we need to jump without Novell's help, but Peter I might have to call you to see if you could help us on some of these (i.e. a way to interface a NDS triggered event into our billing system so that our monthly customer service invoices accurately reflect the services being offered by the eeeB@SE.com foundation that is controlled by a single NDS structure). We don't have the Novell/NDS API and app development expertise in our small group. We should talk this week Peter! Cheers! Toy
