[edit: OptiSPEED, LazrSPEED info] re:>>"LU has a cut of this too, but I forget for the moment the brand name they use for it. Anyone know?"

There's the Lucent OptiSPEED and the Avaya (Lucent spinoff: AV) LazrSPEED, but I can't seem to locate any links on either website.

later.....here we go...both were subsumed into Avaya:http://commerce1.avaya.com/systimax/about_fiber.html

Avaya is proud to announce the first multi-mode fiber backbone that combines cost-effective, next-generation performance with previous-generation compatibility. We call it the LazrSPEED™ Solution, and we think you’re going to be impressed. It’s friendly — just plug it in and keep running your existing legacy applications. It’s fast — and you’ll be grateful for its 10-gigabit-per-second capacity sooner than you think. Best of all, it’s affordable. Other 10Gb/s systems require complex electronics that drive costs through the roof. The LazrSPEED Solution requires only a single low-cost VCSEL transceiver. We think you’ll agree that this design breakthrough makes a LazrSPEED network the most cost-effective 10-gigabit solution in the industry today. [read more about it here]

Avaya’s OptiSPEED™ Solution was the first fiber-optic medium in the industry to exceed the new Gigabit Ethernet Standard. For lowest loss, nothing else on the market even comes close. An OptiSPEED LC channel delivers 25% more bandwidth and up to 60% less optical loss — a critical advantage since the new Gigabit Ethernet standard has slashed loss budgets from 12.5 to 2.5dB in systems operating at 850nm. Design flexibility is unprecedented. The OptiSPEED LC can support up to six connections at distances up to 300 meters in Gigabit Ethernet links. That’s four more connections per channel than any other standard fiber solution in the industry can support. And because of increased port density, our LC connector saves space and simplifies administration by dramatically reducing your closet and floor space requirements. [read more about it here]
