I had similar thoughts to yours reading the segment which you quoted about Intel's testing of data retention and I do believe it's possible that Lexar's Flash is faster because of less error checking overhead -- although I don't pretend to know enough to say either way for certain.

Intel didn't throw in the towel on MLC, though -- I think you're thinking of their miniature card format (I forget what it was called), which business they sold to someone else. And, I presume that the data retention reliability attested to in the article is as good or better than ever. I did note, however, that their MLC is only good for 10,000 cycles (at least in '97 when the article was written).
