Paul,

To customers (Dell, SGI, Compaq, NEC, IBM - heard of these?) plus Independent Software Vendors, etc.

How long are these "customers" going to hang on to those Itanium chips. Could it be that the real customers don't want to buy them?

I notice in your other post that Compaq is offering FREE Itanium systems for evaluation.

Is there a way for these OEMs to return the chips to Intel for a refund if nobody wants to buy them? Is Intel actually charging for those 30,000 chips, or is Intel giving them away for free?

I read a story somewhere that Intel has to actually pay the developers to write software for Itanium. I don't think Intel pays people to write software for x86 machines. What's the problem with Itanium? I thought Itanium was intended for the most lucrative market. Something is wrong here.

Or is the assistance for software developers a way to keep people who bet on Itanium from going under?

Joe

Enough of the bickering over semantics and revisionist historical accountings, the fact is that the psychology behind the market's poor valuation for AMD is no longer valid.
These earnings and respective PE Ratios are from Yahoo Profiles:

Earnings / PE RATIO
DELL .68 / 48
CPQ .91 / 34
GTW 1.6 / 31
INTC 1.7 / 27
AMD 2.6 / 9

Do you seriously believe that this in an aberration?
