Internet usage in the US has reached a plateau as consumers spend less time on the web, according to a survey published today.

The report, by consultants at PwC, the professional services group, shows that while more US consumers access the internet from home than in the other four countries surveyed, they spend an hour less per week on the net than a year ago.

PwC's fourth annual technology study found that 44 per cent of Americans access the internet compared with 38 per cent in Australia, 31 in the UK, 31 in Germany and 16 in France. However, in 1999, US internet penetration stood at 43 per cent.

Robert Boyle, PwC's director of European media, said: "Penetration in the US seems to have almost peaked, or at least plateaued. In the US usage went down from 5.3 hours a week to 4.2 hours compared with a rise from 2.4 hours to 3.2 hours in Europe."

It would take another year or two to establish whether this was a trend, he added.

PwC's report concluded that nine out of 10 homes use the internet mainly for research or to send email. END.

That gas station attendant joke is a good one. (I just ran across it, so I haven't checked). Did you post it on the joke thread? It describes Hillary well and it's funny at the same time.
