Hi George,
"ANYBODY can be hit with big losses if they get overconfidant."

I guess a corollary to your story might be that:

"Any genius can make pretty good money in a raging bull market."

Making it and keeping it are different tasks. My sympathies to your cousin.
Can't feel very good. I wonder how much his broker made from his trades?
I wonder how much Uncle Sam got paid along the way?

I saw this same sort of trap snap shut in 1987 for some of my investing
friends. The traders had huge tax bills from ST gains while at the same
time rapidly shrinking portfolio values. MAALOX Moments. Lucky for
them, by the time taxes were due, some of the portfolios had recovered
quite a bit from the October lows.

Thanks for the story.

Best regards, Tom

i agree with you...i also lost over 100k but i wasn't afraid to admit my mistakes and take a profit before i lost everything....sometimes it helps to be humbled...thats why i always read this section now....i learned the hard way that it doesn't matter how good your picks are.... but more important what direction the economy and market are headed.....perhaps the only bright thing i did was buy my mom a new car and me and my wife a new car last year.....before i possibly lost that money....i now have much less to play with but it makes me appreciate the hard work most of you have put in thru the years to make the money you do.....i guess what i'm trying to say is that it is good to be humbled once in a while....
