significant increase
in mobile phone
users

JAMILA ZHOU

China is expected to have 73.7 million
mobile phone users by the end of the year,
People's Daily reported on Friday, citing
the latest government forecast.

China Mobile, the largest mobile
communications operators on the
mainland, expects 60 million users by the
end of year, up from the 48.16 million it
had in June.

China Unicom, the only other operator in
this sector in China, expects 13.7 million
mobile phone users, up from the 11.13
million it had in June.

The capacity of the country's mobile
communication network is also expected
to grow to 125.72 million lines by
year-end, up from June's 96.02 million
lines.

China Mobile anticipates 99.95 million
lines; China Unicom, 25.77 million lines.

Mobile communication is developing very
fast in China. The country only had 41.82
million users in 1999. In the first half of
this year, the number soared to 60 million,
allowing China to bypass Japan as the
Asian country with the largest number of
mobile phone users.
