Peter,

The scary part about that service was that unless you took the time to read the agreement, you'd have no idea what they're doing. They're basically getting people to sign up by enticing them through other services.

For example, I belong to igive.com which is a portal to shopping sites on the net. When you go through them to get to the other sites (like Amazon), whatever charity you've indicated gets a cut from the purchase. Now they're offering a free "upgrade" to the service which, if you accept, will result in $3.00 being donated to the charity. This upgrade is touted as an "Internet accelerator," but in reality is just giving VoiceFive the right to monitor your web usage habits.

I was alerted to this when a message was sent out on a e-mail list I belong to encouraging everyone to sign up for this upgrade because it could result in a nice hunk of change going to the charity we all back. I was ready to do it until I read the fine print. A lot of other people didn't do that though, and signed up. They're a little perturbed, but of course they have no one to blame but themselves. The details were all there if they had just taken the time to read them.
