Joe,

Our setup consists of one big rack "closet", with each node (motherboard et al) separated by a layer of sheet metal. This still leaves the back open (about 2 inches, where the wires run - although these are encased in the hollow of the corner post of the rack closet). At the bottom of the rack we have two (redundant) power supplies.

We've had one power failure before installing the second power supply (ouch) and one after (switched cleanly). In the former case, we suffered a downtime of less than 2 hours, but lost results worth maybe 2-3x that. It was more of an annoyance than a catastrophe (but did prompt us to install the second power supply).

<Are you talking about UPS or system power supplies?>

System power supplies.
