you can try this....

right click the desktop, select properties, then settings, then advanced. on the general tab dialog you'll find a font size drop down menu. mine says 'small size' and is normal. i notice that 'other' settings provides custom % settings.

i believe the default is small.

see what you have going on there. remember to apply and ok your way out if you make a change.

My problem is the type appearance-it is very small and of a very poor quality...

As far as the quality, try this: right click the desktop, then properties, then effects. Find "smooth edges of screen fonts", and make sure there's a check in the box.
