Dan, We are getting into a situation where different semi segments can be up/down/sideways at the same time, so that the sector overall can be healthy and prosper.
If CPUs turn down, well AMD has Flash which has a different market that has 2 years of boomtime to run as they order leads are that loneg. By the time that ends then CPUs will probably be in an upcycle?? In the past the semis had such convergence of applications that there was a convergence of fates. When CPUs died, then glue died and RAM and passives died and discretes died etc so they all had hangovers together.
Now there are appearing several segments that are not all in phase and this allows multifaceted producers like AMD, intel etc to shift production capacity around to keep an overall high % utilization of capacity. This will soften any crash, as is even now happening
