Some Republicans are trying to appear confident now but they have reason to be scared as hell. The new Gallup poll shows Bush ahead by 3% but his 35% lead in Texas alone is worth 2% of the nation. In other words, his out-sized leads in non-battleground states are worthless. It only takes one vote more to win a state and ther whole prize. Meanwhile Gore narrowly leads now in almst every battleground state. Too close to call but with Gore gaining slight momentum in the end, the DUI story knocking Bush off-message (phony message anyway), Nader voters going back to Gore and Dems getting out the minority vote it could easily be a Gore victory even if Bush wins by 3% in overall votes. To deny this is to deny reality. And if Gore stays ahead in Florida, Bush can pretty much forget about it. Gore wins if he wins Florida. And if Bush wins Florida Gore can still win by taking Tenn, Ark and Oregon. At least those are my calculations. Gore seems pretty safe now in all Great lakes states including Pennsylvania.
