Re: Tax cut for wealthiest and lawyers' fees in tobacco settlement: Your point is valid. However, I would rather have too many safety and environmental standards than too few. Too many businesses would be tempted to cut corners on safety if they knew that the most they would have to pay out would be $6 million or similar.

Re: Your dad's hospital stay at VA hospital: That is good news to hear. One of the hallmarks of a "civilized" society is how well it treats its elderly. Listening to author Stephen Ambrose on C-Span2 this afternoon (excellent program), he mentioned that we still have 6 million World War II veterans living. It is important that we strive to improve our VA hospitals, if nothing more than to say thanks to these brave men and women.

The states could have financed their own law suits, used their own attorney's general staff. The lawyers were willing to take the risk and it paid off. When they started the outlook for damages was weak.
Contingent fees are the only way risky suits get into court.
Eminently fair, and not at all obscene.
