Regarding the black vote---excerpt from this morning's Dallas Morning News--

Vice President Al Gore crooned "We Shall Overcome," clasping hands with black ministers at a prayer breakfast in his home state, Tennessee.

Mr. Gore, at the prayer breakfast in Memphis, urged the largely black gathering of nearly 1,000 ministers to "take your souls to the polls." And, baring his own soul a bit, he pleaded for their votes.

"You know that God sees on the inside and not on the outside. And you know, it doesn't matter whether my coat is on or off, what color suit I wear, what kind of tie I put on," he intoned, preacher-style. "You know me. You know what is in my heart."

Actually, I think I said the ratio among African-Americans is 8-1, which translates to 89 percent Democrat and 11 percent Republican. But whether it's 89 percent or 80 percent is not all that important. The fact remains the Republicans have gained virtually no ground the past 20 years in attracting minorities into the party. New Mexico, for instance, is still in play because few Hispanics have embraced Bush.

Yes, the president is supposed to be everybody's president. However, let us not forget that congressmen and congresswomen represent distinct classes of people, and not everyone. And therein lies the problem.

If Bush wins, I am hopeful he would rise above the level of the GOP attack dogs in Congress ... Armey, DeLay, Lott. But I doubt if this will be the case. I have little confidence in Bush as a leader, and even less confidence in the man as an independent thinker.
