A couple of thoughts on T going CDMA:

1. CTOs are easier to fire than CEOs.

2. Politically, 1XEV(HDR) is a data solution that T could claim (using a very liberal interpretation of the truth) uses some TDMA principles and is only a "little bit different" than what they have been planning.

3. The time frame for HDR availability is not inconsistent with T's pronouncements about EDGE availability.

4. They could claim their network can offer the same DATA RATES as PCS and VZ. They would use multi-mode/band phones.

5. They need only resolve spectrum issues first. But they were going to have to do that anyway.

T didn't invent Cellular communication, some guy at MOT did. T didn't create a national network, they bought it from McCaw.
