Its sad that US diplomats succeeded in delaying discussion of the situation until after the election.

Sad, possibly, but also practical. It would be difficult for a lame duck administration to apply any relevant pressure, and it's probably better to give the next guy a chance to start building a policy. As we all know, the problem isn't going to be solved in days, or months, or probably years.

I don't personally think that a UN military force is called for at this point; if we're going to send in the troops every time there's civil disorder, or anywhere troops shoot at rioters, the UN will be very busy indeed.

I would personally like to see the US tell the Israelis to slap a muzzle on Mr. Sharon and make some real progress toward a settlement pretty damned quick, or we'll find someone else who's willing to give us a little more value for our money. But I don't expect that to happen.
