wayne, ss is good if you would have spent the 15% withheld on frivolous crap as no doubt most people would do. properly invested, though, the numbers show that your dad could have received $2400 a year for 1000 years and still had some left over (albeit, not much as inflation over 1000 years is substantial) to pass on to his family (if he contributed 15% his whole life).
