Hitler and his lieutenants were hard core socialists who hated everything about the old Europe. They ran a centralized, protectionist, and statist government. They constantly talked of a proletarian revolution that would destroy the bourgeois class. The Nazi government introduced socialized medicine and imposed gun control. They were health fanatics who banned cigarette smoking, promoted vegetarianism, engaged in abortion and euthenasia, and were opposed to capitalism. Of course the dominant leftist aristocracy in academe slough him off to the right, it's understandable that they need to wash their hands of him. But in the 30s Hitler had support with many left wing intellectuals. Luminaries such as GB Shaw, Bertrand Russell, and Margaret Sanger supported his ideas.
