According to the Nikkei Market Access' announcement, Fujitsu continued to enjoy favorable sales in the third week of October 2000 (Oct. 9 - 15) thanks to the launch of new models. NEC Corp. is an exception, struggling to sell the existing models at a significantly reduced price. Therefore product launch has been delayed. According to the survey conducted by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 household electric appliance discount stores, Japan's PC sales in the third week of October increased by 5.8 percent in volume and 6.1 percent in value from the previous week. When compared with the same week of the previous year (Oct. 11 - 17, 1999), the sales increased by 45.4 percent in volume and by 30.4 percent in value. The average retail price rose by 644 yen to 180,500 yen from the previous week's 179,859 yen. (108.51 yen = US$1) One of the main factors of the sales increase observed in the third week last month is that there was one extra holiday (Oct. 9). Thus, PC sales both in volume and value are expected to take a reactionary decline in the following week (the fourth week of October).
