Of course they were soldiers! One of them was later killed in the battle. You did not misspeak.

I recently read a book by the son of one of the flag-raisers. It details the battle quite well, and follows the life of each of the soldiers who were asked to raise the flag after their discharge from the Armed Forces. A very interesting read. I wish I could remember the name of the book and its author, but I can't

I like the photograph. When I was in the Corps they tried to extort contributions every payday to pay for the stature. I think if they had tried, they could have got some from the civilians.
