Josef: Parliamentary minorities happen occasionally, but arent a regular 4 yr occurrence.

At the moment, polls say he should get a majority.. but the election isnt for 3 weeks, so anything can happen. Even if he does get reduced to a minority, the likely parties who will prop him up are the left of centre New Democrat Party, and the slightly right of centre Progressive Conservatives, neither who have much love lost with the Alliance. They will most likely not support any motion to bring the government down over social program cuts the ALliance want, or a bigger tax cut.

As for his campaign, he is setting himself as the defender of universal medicare, and warning that the right-of-centre Canadian Alliance's tax cut doesnt add up and will end up taking away money from the health system and other nationally-funded programs.. so in a way yes, he is setting himself up as the defender of those programs and warning against the Alliance as an extreme right wing party.
