Scum,

If you remember, some time ago Sony stated publicly that using RDRAM had *saved* them around $30 per system. There are only two chips which are soldered to the board, and I bet they are not paying much more than $15 for the pair.

The money saved came from the RDRAM granularity advantage. Otherwise they would have had to either put more memory in the system than they needed, or use esoteric and expensive x32 SDRAM

Change the record wont you, we're bored with this one.

Ian

I really believe that. Now will you answer my question?

Scumbria, <So you really believe that the high cost of RDRAM is not affecting Sony's profitability?>

First, Sony claims they actually saved money with RDRAM.

And second, Sony has much bigger problems on their plate than the cost of RDRAM (which they probably buy at bargain contract prices anyway). Shortage of PSX2 CPU and graphics chips leading to a shortage of PSX2 systems in the midst of ultra-high demand. Also because of the demand, Sony is literally using Fed Ex to ship PSX2 boxes to retailers as soon as possible.

On the other hand, I really doubt that Sony is cursing the high demand for PSX2. If only AMD had such problems with their newly-released DDR platform ...
